Week 7 Reflection

Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog! It has already been week 7? Time really does fly by. I have been missing for the past two weeks as I was sick on week 5 and week 6 was reading week. Nonetheless I am excited to be back in class with my fellow peers. Dr.Lina was so kind to check up on me to see if I have recovered well. Despite still feeling lethargic, I am happy to be back. For week 7 's lesson Dr. Lina briefed about the assignments and marking rubric. She also mention the Do's and Don'ts for the assignments. After that, Dr. Lina introduced us to the topic storytelling as a teaching strategy.

Dr. Lina dove deep into the significance of storytelling. She mentioned that story telling is one of the most important skills for leading a successful life you can teach a lesson in Education, also inspire commitment with learning or business and even a job interview for your dream (improvise story). A good storyteller has the power to genuinely change people's lives. She elaborated on the definition, significance and challenges when it comes to digital storytelling. A tale is an interconnected sequence of events conveyed via body language, performance, music, words (spoken or written), images (still and moving), and other means of communication. A voyage is portrayed in a story. In a story, we follow a character as they set out to accomplish a goal and encounter various challenges. Any topic can be the subject of a narrative, and the events it describes can be imagined or actual. There are several ways to overcome the challenges of story telling. Which is by giving them a sense of connection to make them feel sympathetic but not pitying and also to focus on the key takeaway message.

At first it was difficult to grasp as I had no prior knowledge on this particular topic. However the more Dr. Lina elaborated the better I understood. Rereading the slides and seeking explanation from my group mates helped as well.  The four elements of story telling is the challenge plot, the creativity plot, the connection plot and the conversion plot.  For better understanding Dr. Lina led us through an activity called "showing but not telling". Where my peers and and I had to find an alternative way to tell the story, changing the sentence without changing the take away message. I was confused at first but after watching my peers generated sentences I finally got the hang of it.

Dr. Lina then showed us a video of herself storytelling about a movie called Sleepless in Seattle.
She showed us how beautifully she had illustrated the storyline of the movie in her video and that inspired me to be better at storytelling as I feel like it is a form of art.  Through this lesson I learned that storytelling is a versatile teaching tool that has multiple benefits. For example, it helps grab students' attention and keep them engaged. Stories have the power to hold an audience's interest and capture their attention, which enhances the educational process. Intrinsic Motivation is that students are encouraged to actively engage in the learning process by narratives, which can pique their curiosity and intrinsic motivation. Furthermore, narratives have the power to produce enduring experiences that improve memory and retention of knowledge. When facts are presented in a narrative framework, students are more likely to recall them. Emotional Bond is a story's emotional resonance might help readers retain information longer. A story's emotions can help the information stick in your memory. Language abilities, such as vocabulary, syntax, and narrative structure, are developed through storytelling. It inspires pupils to use their creativity to express themselves.

Listening Skills is where students' understanding, listening skills, and ability to follow a narrative thread all increase when they listen to stories.Telling stories inspires inventive expression and innovative thought. By telling their own stories, students can be creative and innovative. Critical Thinking is when students analyse and dissect stories, they develop their critical thinking abilities as they assess themes, plot devices, and character motives. Numerous narratives impart moral and ethical teachings. They offer forums for talking about morality, making choices, and the results of deeds. Character Development where students can investigate and evaluate character attributes, motivations, and moral conundrums by reading stories with clearly defined characters. These are some of the many benefits storytelling caters when being used as a teaching tool. This video bellow also helped solidify my understanding on this topic.
